Marcel Holyoak is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California, Davis. He completed his Ph.D. in 1992 and B.Sc. in 1989 at the University of London, Imperial College. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Population Biology, Imperial College, UK for one year, and at the Center for Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University Kentucky, Lexington, KY for one year. He was a researcher in the Department of Entomology at UC Davis until 2000, when he joined the faculty in Environmental Science and Policy.

Marcel’s research interests focus on biodiversity conservation and understanding what structures populations, communities, metapopulations and metacommunities. This entails understanding the spatial and long-term dynamics of populations and communities, spanning empirical, theoretical and statistical studies. Many of these projects are collaborative. His research program is described more fully on the research page.

Marcel is an Associate Dean for Environmental Programs in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of a new Wiley journal Wildlife Letters, and a Senior Editor for Integrative Zoology. From 2008 to 2015 he was the Editor-in-Chief for Ecology Letters. He was a founding board member of Data Dryad a major ecological data repository.
